Most weeks, my husband and I are home with our 16-year-old son while the other kids are at college. Sixteen can be a hard age for talking, but the one bridge I've found between adolescent and parent is the cats. Even on his most sullen days, he's willing to admire the cuteness of a cat or laugh at clumsy antics.
"Got any cats?" he asked in the darkness before he left the room.
I told him his sister had snatched the cats before he returned. He can rest assured that next week the cats will be all his again with the other kids back at school. And that left me wondering if the kids come in at night to reassure me they're home or whether they're only in search of their favorite things in the house -- our pets.

I like the idea of the cats as a "bridge." Whatever works, IMO. I used to find they would talk more when I was driving them somewhere.

Pets are wonderful for kids because they're so accepting. I found my son would open up the most when we were riding in the car.
I never thought about the pets being a bridge but it makes sense. They're a neutral party that everyone adores!

This is a delightful story, and I just uttered a little "awwww" as I read it. "Got any cats?" I just love it! I can remember when one of my sisters and I used to fight over a kitty and whose turn it was to sleep with the cat and whose turn it was to turn out the light. I would usually "steal" the kitty after she fell asleep.
It sounds to me like your kids are well-grounded and that you communicate quite well with them.

That was poignant; your daughter coming into your bedroom scooping up cats and your sons' Got Cats? both show how comfortable they are to show you their softer side. Especially your son. Boys are so stubborn and closed off; it can be tough to break through. Hey! Cute cats pix though.
