Saturday Snapshot -- Union Station in Columbus

To participate in the Saturday Snapshot meme post a photo that you (or a friend or family member) have taken then leave a direct link to your post on Alyce's blog At Home With Books. Photos can be old or new, and be of any subject as long as they are clean and appropriate for all eyes to see. How much detail you give in the caption is entirely up to you. Please don’t post random photos that you find online.
On Thursday, I walked home from work because all the cars in the family were busy. It gave me a chance to take a picture of the Union Station arch in the Arena District of Columbus, right across the street from the arena where the Blue Jackets hockey team plays.

I never got to see the actual building. This was all that was left when I moved to Columbus.

That is a great picure of the union street arch. I went to OSU in the 80's and lived there and don't remember this. There is a lot of history in Columbus and it's changed over the years.

Diane's comment, lol is right! We have a Union Station in L.A..
So disappointing the actual station is gone; but at least they kept the arch. - I got curious and learned that the original station was demolished DESPITE being listed in the National Register of Historic Places. If you believe Wikipedia, the arch was moved and the land it sits on now was once a penitentiary????

That arch is one of those places that it would be difficult not to photograph! We haven't explored much in the city yet, other than our neighborhood and the university.

That's a great shot! And I had the same thought as Diane -- so many Union Stations out there!

Here is my SATURDAY SNAPSHOT post.

What a great arch, such a shame the building isn't there still, it must have been impressive. I've travelled around America by train, and many of the big stations are lovely old buildings.

Even if not by choice, don't you cherish those walks home from work. Seeing the same things we drive by with a very different perspective. Connecting us in to our community in a way nothing else can.

Thanks for the beautiful picture.

Great arch! I do love old buildings and wonderful architectural detail.

You're probably not far from Alyce, now, huh?

Thanks for visiting my blog, and my retreat into the woods during the aftermath of 9/11 was definitely a wonderful healing time. A reminder of how friends can be just what we need sometimes.

Laurel, No, I'm not far from Alyce. Just a couple of blocks. It's been fun to meet a blog friend in person.

I love this shot, the arch looks so imposing.

Also, I have an answer to the Union Station question. :-) Often many separate railroad lines would put their resources together to build one train station that they would all share, instead of (or in addition to) each having their own. So the station was the union where all the train lines met together in that city.

Cockadoodle Doo or Cocorico?

We stood in the middle of the road, having walked together 13 miles that day and Claudine grasped my forearm. "Mais non! It doesn'...
